چکیده

Background: Tendon defects remain a major concern in orthopedic surgery because of the limited availability of tendon autografts. Since the extracellular collagen-based matrix derived from porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) has been successfully used in repair of many tissues, such as abdominal wall, vessels and bladder, we hypothesized that SIS can be used to repair an experimentally induced Achilles tendon defect. Material and Methods: Seventeen New Zealand rabbits were submitted to Achilles tendon resection (1.5 cm length) in the right posterior limb and this defect was repaired with SIS. The left Achilles tendon (sham operated) was used as a control. Daily examination was performed for 30 days. On the day of sacrifice, Achilles tendon from both limbs was excised and signs of infection, dehiscence, incorporation and degree of adhesion were evaluated. Extracellular matrix scaffolds are repopulated by bone marrow-derived cells in a mouse model of achilles tendon reconstruction.

The extracellular matrix derived from porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS-ECM), an FDA-approved material currently used clinically for rotator cuff repair, has been shown to attract bone marrow-derived cells during in vivo remodeling of a subcutaneous implant and produce chemoattractant peptides following chemical degradation in vitro. The purpose of the present study was to determine if bo...

No midterm advantages in the middle term using small intestinal submucosa and human amniotic membrane in Achilles tendon transverse tenotomy

BACKGROUND The study was aimed to compare the effects of small intestinal submucosa (SIS) and human amniotic membrane (HAM) on Achilles tendon healing. METHODS A total of 48 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into two groups. A full-thickness transverse tenotomy was made at the right leg of the rabbits. Then, the laceration site was wrapped with HAM (P/A group) or SIS (P/S group). The ult...

Augmentation of Achilles Tendon Repair Using a Decellularized Porcine Dermal Graft Compared to Two Other Collagen Xenografts

Introduction: Complete rupture of the Achilles tendon in the young, active patient is often surgically repaired by suturing the tendon fragments end-to-end. The repair can be augmented using a collagen graft to form a stronger construct. In this study, we employ a canine model to examine a new decellularized porcine dermal graft in comparison to two control xenografts currently in clinical use....

Achilles Tendon Repair, A Modified Technique

Background: Wound complications following open repair for acute Achilles tendon ruptures (AATR) remain the subject of significant debate. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of covering repaired AATR using well-nourished connective tissues (paratenon and deep fascia) to avoid complications after open repair.   Methods: In this case series study, open repair was performed for 3...

[Porcine submucosa graft for the treatment of duodenal injuries in dogs].

PURPOSE To evaluate the biocompatibility and effectiveness of porcine SIS (small intestinal submucosa), when used as a patch to repair a defect on the anterior duodenal wall. METHODS The experimental study was performed in 8 dogs. A segment of the anterior duodenal wall was removed and the defect was repaired with a patch of porcine intestinal submucosa. On the 120th post operative day the an...
